BIRDING

Brownsville is for the birds and birdwatchers. Throughout the year nearly five hundred species can be found here. Popular locations for viewing include the Brownsville Sanitary Landfill, Camp Lula Sams, the numerous resacas around town, Boca Chica wetlands, the 'parrot roost' on Los Ebanos Street, and the Sabal Palm Audubon Sanctuary. The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail has a number of signed sites here. Experienced guides are available for tours or extended trips.

  • BROWNSVILLE INTERNATIONAL BIRDING FESTIVAL
  • The third Brownsville International Birding Festival will showcase the unique summer birding in Brownsville and the region later this month. The festival offers a packed and varied program of field trips, seminars, and related functions for experienced birders and those wanting to learn more about birding during 24-28 July 20022.
  • Field trips will explore both birding and butterflying locations about Brownsville. A special one will go into the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico for pelagic birding. Another goes into Mexico to a ranch south of Matamoros while the King Ranch is also a tour destination.
  • Birding on the water will be done on the Rio Grande canoe trip. The Sabal Palm Audubon Sanctuary and Laguna Atascosa NWR are explored along with South Bay of Laguna Madre on the trips. All field tours are guided and planned for as many specie sightings as possible. Most field trips still have space available; however, advance reservations are required to assure space on each trip.
  • Seminars will delve into a number of nature topics on 3 afternoons. Subjects include pelagic seabirds, butterfly watching, King Ranch habitat, the World Birding Center, Laguna Atascosa NWR species, and more. Two evening presentations will cover Rio Grande Valley and Mexican birding.
  • An Infoshare Marketplace will be open during the festival at the event headquarters, the Holiday Inn Fort Brown. Both information and birding products will be on hand. On Saturday, the Festival Children's Program will feature numerous hands-on activities to introduce fun nature concepts for kids. This event will be at the Stillman Town Hall on the UTB-TSC campus next door.
  • Presented by the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, the Brownsville International Birding Festival begins on Wednesday, 24 July 2002 and continues through Sunday, 28 July 2002. Pre and post-trips into Mexico are also available along with information on www.brownsville.org by clicking the Festival Icon or by contacting the Brownsville CVB at 1-800-626-2639.
